Working Remotely

Or how to access documents on the beach...

Being able to use your files and programs remotely is a technology that has been around for a good number of years.

This short article outlines the different technologies that are available, and the access that they can readily give you.

All the solutions discussed below are built-in components of recent Microsoft Business (Professional) Operating Systems; if properly configured they will allow remote access to all of your resources.

VPN

A Virtual Private Network connection is a connection initiated over the internet, which allows a remote machine access to a network, as if it was plugged in on site.  VPNs give the client machine an IP address on the local network and allow full access to network resources.  It can allow access to files, printers and internal websites.

Once a VPN has been established we are able to use other pieces of software to get direct access to machines or applications.

Remote Desktop

A Remote Desktop Connection allows for access to all of the hardware, programs and files on a remote machine.  Remote desktop works by redirecting the data that would normally be sent to the screen of the controlled machine and forwarding it to the controlling machine.  The keyboard and mouse (and also speakers and USB devices) are redirected from the controlling computer to the controlled machine.  This allows full access to the machine as if you were sat in front of it.

Remote Apps

Remote Apps is a new program which allows for a single program running on another machine to be remotely controlled.  This is useful for when only a single program is needed, not access to the whole computer.

Applications for your business

These remote working technologies can give you access to your company network or workstations from a remote office, or help you provide flexible working arrangments for your staff without negatively impacting your business.
